It was named after her father's estate, "Rookwood," which in turn was named for a character in a popular novel at the time. Rookwood Pottery became famous for its high-quality, artistically-inclined ceramics and played a major role in the American art pottery movement. It was known for a variety of styles, including Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts, and Art Deco. Many talented artists were employed there and they were encouraged to sign and date their work, which now adds to the value of Rookwood pieces. Unfortunately, the Great Depression hit the company hard, and it ceased production in 1967. However, the brand was revived in 2004 and continues to produce ceramics today. Collectors prize vintage Rookwood Pottery for its beauty, quality, and the fascinating history it represents.
