Vintage African Mende Bundu Helmet Mask

This is a traditional Mende Bundu helmet mask. This rare African art form is traditionally carved by men but worn only by women of the powerful Sande society. The mask represents an ideal guardian spirit and celebrates the essence of feminine beauty, especially during important coming-of-age ceremonies. The mask measures 13.5 x 13 x 16.6 inches. It is in good overall condition, with wear consistent with age and use. There is a visible crack along the side of the face, as well as some chips, scuffs, and scratches throughout.
